Your answer to police layoffs?

Mike points out another example of massive police layoffs and asks a pertinent question.  (link here)

This problem of nosediving local tax base and police layoffs is a fedgov created problem that fedgov will be only too happy to "solve".  I think we can reliably predict what they will do about this.

Once crime goes through the roof in many of these cities, there will be a crisis and an ensuing public outcry for better police protection.

What fedgov could do at that point is to either directly or indirectly take over the job of the local police force.

Direct:
For the "hardest hit areas", (i.e. the bluest of cities) this could mean National Guard (as Chicago has already proposed), the Obama youth army, or some new police force yet to be created (Think TSA all over again-but without the professionalism and attention to detail).  We'll just call them, "SS".

Indirect:
For other areas not hit as hard, there may be offers of "emergency" federal funding to "restore" the laid off policemen to their jobs.  Which gets the camel's nose in the door and will impose conditions on the local police that suit fedgov's desire for control.  And like the stimulus, I'm sure that the conditions imposed by fedgov will be required as permanent changes for temporary money.  Example; Hiring quotas and standards that ensure that the aforementioned Obama Youth Army types will be hired and the police force returns to their previous numbers even if the laid off policemen aren't rehired.

Sorry to be the bringer of badness on a Monday morning, but mark my words, Obama won't let this crisis go to waste.

My reaction? Pick up the slack and watch your back. Oh, and speaking of police, today marks the 64th anniversary of the Battle of Athens.

I say: let them go, I bet citizen armament will increase and crime decrease. Also, I don't know about Chicago but in my much smaller city the police spend most of their time harassing young kids at the local movie theaters (there is always at least one there) and guarding the two amusement parks we have (I have always found it infuriating that our tax dollars pay for these guys to hang out at these parks, and they have their own private security!).

It is good to cut the fat every now and again.
